About This Technique
The Fireman's Carry in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The Fireman's Carry is a technique primarily originating from wrestling, but it has been effectively adapted for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's a throw technique used to bring an opponent to the ground from a standing position.
Japanese Name
N/A
Position
- Standing
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Establish Grips and Base
- Begin in a standing position facing your opponent. Utilize a collar grip with one hand (typically your right hand) and control one of their arms using your free hand.
-
Initiate the Setup
- Step into your opponent with your left leg between their legs while pulling down on their right arm with your left hand. Bait them to lean towards that side for balance recovery.
-
Execute the Drop and Underhook
- As your opponent compensates, drop to your right knee. Simultaneously slide your right arm under their right leg, securing their thigh near your shoulder.
- Maintain a strong grip and pull their arm tightly across your chest, disrupting their balance further.
-
Lift and Position
- Using the leverage of your body and the grip on their leg, rotate your body slightly to the left while keeping strong posture to raise their leg upward.
- Turn your torso and head towards your left side while ensuring their weight is distributed over your shoulders.
-
Commit to the Throw
- Explosively lift with your legs as you continue to turn to your left side, roller-costering your opponent over your body.
- As their body cascades over you, stabilize your stance by widening your base to maintain control over the throw.
-
Secure the Landing
- Aim to have them land in a controlled manner, either directly in front of you or to the side.
- As they hit the mats, maintain your grip on their arm and follow them to the ground.
-
Transition to Dominant Position
- Capitalize on the takedown by immediately transitioning to side control or full mount, depending on their landing and how you prefer to secure a dominant position.
Notes
- Always practice the technique with proper safety and start slowly before implementing it at full speed.
- This move can be most effectively utilized against opponents of similar weight class, given its reliance on leveraging their weight rather than sheer strength.
- Incorporate this move with other setup techniques to disguise your intentions and maximize effectiveness.
How to Execute
Fireman’s Carry from Standing Position in BJJ
Setup
- •Initial Position Details: Start in a standing position facing your opponent. Ensure you have a solid base with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent for balance and mobility.
- •Grips and Controls Needed: Establish a collar tie with one hand (right hand for this example) by gripping the back of your opponent's neck. With your opposite hand (left hand), secure a grip on your opponent's sleeve or wrist for control.
Steps
- •
Create an Angle
- •Use your collar tie to pull your opponent down slightly, causing them to react and create forward pressure.
- •Step your left foot forward and to the outside, creating an angle with your body perpendicular to your opponent.
- •
Drop Your Level
- •Drop your level by bending your knees and lowering your hips.
- •As you drop, slide your right arm under your opponent's right arm, reaching around their waist or thigh, depending on their reaction and your grip preference.
- •
Position Your Head
- •Tuck your head to the inside of your opponent's torso, keeping it tight against their body.
- •Your head should be just below their armpit, providing leverage and control.
- •
Lift and Rotate
- •Drive with your legs, using the power from your hips and legs to lift your opponent onto your shoulders.
- •As you lift, rotate your torso to turn your opponent over your back. Keep your grip tight and maintain control.
- •
Complete the Throw
- •Continue to rotate your body while stepping forward with your right foot, creating momentum to complete the throw.
- •Guide your opponent over your back and safely to the mat.
- •
Control the Landing
- •As your opponent lands, maintain control by holding their arm and staying close to their body.
- •Transition into a dominant position such as side control or North-South.
Key Points
- •
Important Details to Remember:
- •Use your legs and hips for the lifting power, not just your arms.
- •Maintain a tight grip on your opponent's arm and waist throughout the technique.
- •Ensure your head is positioned correctly for balance and leverage.
- •
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- •Avoid pulling your opponent purely with your arms; utilize your whole body for efficiency.
- •Do not lean too far forward, as this can compromise your balance and control.
- •Ensure you create the angle before dropping your level to maximize the effectiveness of the throw.
