About This Technique

John Wayne Sweep

Position:

  • Half Guard

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Establish Half Guard:

    • Begin in half guard with your opponent on top, securing your legs around one of theirs.
    • Use your outside leg to hook onto their leg to maintain control.
  2. Secure the Underhook:

    • Reach your far arm (the arm further from your opponent's head) and thread it underneath their arm.
    • Ideally, you want the arm to go under their armpit and up their back, so your hand is close to their shoulder.
  3. Position Your Base:

    • Plant your inside leg (the one closer to your opponent) firmly on the mat anteriorly, preparing to bridge.
    • Use the underhook to pull yourself closer and give you more leverage.
  4. Grab the Knee or Sleeve:

    • Use your free arm to grab your opponent’s far knee or sleeve, aiding in breaking their base.
  5. Set the Trap:

    • With your outside leg, shift your hips beneath your opponent, aligning their center of gravity above your head.
    • Get your knee beneath their body, ready to lift and sweep.
  6. Execute the Sweep:

    • Push into your opponent's knee/sleeve with the hand grabbing it to destabilize them.
    • Simultaneously bridge your hips and roll diagonally using the momentum to turn your opponent over your inner shoulder.
  7. Complete the Transition:

    • As your opponent topples over, follow them by coming up onto your knees.
    • Transition to a top position, typically moving into side control or another dominant position.
  8. Maintain Control:

    • Establish a strong top control, ensuring your opponent doesn't immediately counter the position change.

This technique leverages a combination of force and tactical positioning to capitalize on the physical imbalance of your opponent while holding a seemingly dominant half guard. Timing, leverage, and the integrity of grips play crucial roles in effectively executing the John Wayne Sweep.

Key Points:

  • Maintain a Strong Underhook: It provides control and leverage.
  • Knee Positioning: The knee placed under your opponent helps lift and overturn them.
  • Timing and Momentum: An effective sweep requires coordination and timing with your opponent's movement.

Variations:

  • This move can be countered or modified based on your opponent's reactions, making adaptation a key component.

How to Execute

# John Wayne Sweep from Half Guard

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in the half guard position, where you are on your back with your opponent's right leg trapped between your legs. Your opponent is on top, possibly looking to pass your guard.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Use your right hand to establish an underhook on your opponent’s left arm. Your left hand should control their right sleeve or wrist. Ensure your left leg is hooked over your opponent's right thigh, and your right knee is positioned against their hip or thigh to maintain distance and control.

## Steps
1. **Create Space**: Use your right hand underhook to elevate and off-balance your opponent slightly to your left side, creating space for your next movements. Simultaneously, use your left knee to push against their right side for added leverage.

2. **Adjust Your Position**: Shrimp your hips slightly away from your opponent to create more space, allowing you to sit up on your left elbow. This movement will help you get closer to your opponent's body and facilitate the sweep.

3. **Deep Underhook and Control**: With your right hand, reach deeper through the underhook to grip your opponent's belt or far lat. This control will be key to turning them over. Your left hand should continue controlling their right arm to prevent them from posting out.

4. **Sweep Execution**: Once you have secured the deep underhook and controlled their arm, use your left leg to kick out and elevate their trapped leg while driving your right shoulder forward. This movement will effectively rotate their hips and take them over to your left side.

5. **Complete the Sweep**: As your opponent falls, follow through by continuing to drive with your underhook and maintain control of their arm. Use the momentum to come up on top, landing in a dominant position such as side control.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**: Keep your underhook tight and deep to prevent your opponent from countering the sweep. Ensure your left leg provides the necessary elevation to disrupt their base.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**: Failing to secure a deep underhook can lead to losing control, allowing your opponent to regain their balance or counter. Also, not controlling their far arm can enable them to post and stop the sweep.

By following these detailed steps and focusing on the key points, you can effectively execute the John Wayne Sweep from the half guard position.
