About This Technique

Electric Chair: Step-by-Step Guide

Position:

  • Positioned primarily in Half Guard or Rubber Guard.

Japanese Name:

  • N/A (If there's a specific name applied in Japanese martial arts, it is not widely known in the Jiu-Jitsu community).

Overview

The Electric Chair is a submission primarily used to attack from Half Guard, often transitioning from the Rubber Guard. It utilizes a combination of sweep and submission targeting the groin and hamstring of your opponent.

Step-by-Step Execution:

1. Establish Half Guard/Rubber Guard:

  • Begin in a Half Guard position. Ensure you have your legs wrapped around one of your opponent's legs.
  • From here, transition to Rubber Guard by pulling your opponent's posture down while controlling their upper body, trapping the same side arm.

2. Secure Control:

  • Use your arm to cup your opponent's knee on the side you have the half guard on.
  • With the other arm, reach under your opponent's far leg, aiming to grip it behind their knee (this is essential for the Electric Chair setup).

3. Transition into Electric Chair:

  • Adjust your underhooking arm (from under their far leg) to bring your head closer towards your opponent's leg.
  • Aim to place your opposite leg behind their far leg to trap it fully; now you should have both their legs controlled, forming a position known as the 'Lockdown'.

4. Initiate the Sweep:

  • Begin to extend your trapped legs with a strong body bridge motion to push your opponent's weight forward.
  • Pull their far leg towards you, using the strength of the underhook to tip their balance.
  • As they collapse over, maintain your grip to prevent them from regaining posture and position.

5. Execute the Submission:

  • Once they are partially swept, continue your bridge motion while pulling their far leg down towards your shoulder.
  • This creates significant pressure on their groin and hamstring, leading to a submission if applied correctly.

6. Optional Transition to Top Control:

  • If your opponent does not submit, or if you wish to establish a more dominant position, use the opportunity to transition into top position.
  • Push off their torso to move into side control or north-south position.

Tips and Considerations

  • Always be mindful of your opponent's reactions. If they counter, be ready to swiftly move to another sweep or submission.
  • Proper control of their far leg is crucial in both holding them and applying pressure effectively.
  • Use your entire body as leverage, especially during the sweeping motion.

Conclusion

The Electric Chair is a powerful technique requiring flexibility and timing. It serves as a blend of both sweep and submission, making it a valuable addition to a grappler's arsenal when used correctly from Half Guard or Rubber Guard.

How to Execute

# Electric Chair from Half Guard

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in the half guard position with your opponent's right leg trapped between your legs. You should be on your right side with your right arm underhooking your opponent's left leg.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Ensure you have a firm grip around your opponent's left leg with your right arm. Your left hand can be used to control their hip or back to prevent them from flattening you out.

## Steps
1. **Establish the Lockdown**:
   - Use your legs to establish the lockdown by lacing your left foot over your opponent's right ankle and hooking your right foot under your left ankle. This creates a strong control over their leg.

2. **Create Space**:
   - Use your left hand to push on your opponent's hip while simultaneously extending your lockdown to create space between you and your opponent.

3. **Underhook and Elevate**:
   - Deepen your right arm underhook under your opponent's left leg, pulling it towards you.
   - Simultaneously, use your lockdown to extend and elevate your opponent's trapped leg, turning their hips and creating an angle.

4. **Transition Your Head**:
   - Move your head under your opponent's right leg, aiming to bring it over your shoulder. This action increases leverage and control.

5. **Sweep to the Side**:
   - Use your lockdown and underhook to sweep your opponent towards their left side by continuing to extend your legs and pulling with your right arm.

6. **Secure the Electric Chair**:
   - As they fall, transition into the electric chair submission by maintaining the lockdown and applying pressure to their groin and hamstring area with your legs.
   - Your right arm should still be controlling their left leg, and you can use your left hand to push their knee away, increasing the stretch.

7. **Finish**:
   - To finish, keep extending your legs while controlling their trapped leg with your arm. This will create a painful stretch in their groin area, prompting a tap.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Maintain control of your opponent’s leg throughout the technique. Your underhook and lockdown are crucial for both control and leverage.
  - Keep your head protected and tightly positioned to avoid being cross-faced or flattened out.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Failing to establish a deep underhook can result in losing control and not being able to execute the sweep.
  - Allowing your opponent to flatten you out or cross-face you will make it difficult to initiate the electric chair.
  - Not maintaining the lockdown properly can result in losing control of the opponent’s leg, making the transition and submission ineffective.
