Position
- Position: Closed Guard, Side Control
- Top/Bottom: Top
Instructions
From Closed Guard (Top):
-
Securing the Grip:
- From within your opponent's closed guard, control one of their arms by securing their wrist with one hand and placing your other hand around their tricep.
-
Posture Up:
- Use this controlled grip to maintain posture, keeping your back straight and weight centered over your hips.
-
Opening the Guard:
- With their arm controlled, you can stand up with one leg to create enough space to start opening the guard. As you break their guard, keep their arm tightly tucked into your side.
-
Applying Pressure to Ribs:
- Transition onto your knees above their torso, ensuring one knee is alongside their ribs. Use your controlled grip to pull their trapped arm toward their opposite side, applying your body weight down onto their exposed ribs.
-
Finishing the Technique:
- You can intensify the pressure by expanding your chest while maintaining your grip and leaning in further to make your opponent tap.
From Side Control:
-
Establish Side Control:
- Secure a dominant side control position by pinning your opponent's shoulders with your arms and your knees pinning their sides.
-
Position Your Arms:
- Move your arm closest to their hips under their far-side arm and secure a grip over their shoulder, with your other hand stabilizing their far-side hip.
-
Creating Space:
- Use your chest to apply pressure onto their torso as you slightly back your hips away while pulling their arm across their body to expose their rib cage.
-
Applying the Rib Crusher:
- Move your knee closest to their ribs to press onto their rib cage, using your body weight. Maintain your grip and position while exerting maximum weight and torque.
-
Achieving the Submission:
- Apply gradual and controlled pressure onto their lower ribs as you pull their arm further, compressing their ribs until you achieve a submission or transition to full mount or other favorable positions.
Safety Tips
- Training Safety: Always practice the Rib Crusher with a trusted partner and focus on your partner's feedback to ensure safety and prevent injury.
Conclusion
Though it requires precise control and understanding of body mechanics, mastering the Rib Crusher can be a useful tool in any BJJ practitioner's arsenal, especially when transitioning between positions or seeking submissions. Always prioritize safety and mutual respect with training partners when practicing this technique.
How to Execute
# Rib Crusher from Closed Guard
## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: You are in the closed guard position, with your legs locked around your opponent's waist. Your opponent is postured up, trying to maintain base and balance.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**:
- Secure a cross-collar grip with one hand to control their posture.
- Use the other hand to control the opposite sleeve or wrist of your opponent to limit their ability to post or defend.
## Steps
1. **Break Your Opponent's Posture**:
- Use your cross-collar grip to pull your opponent’s upper body down towards you, breaking their posture.
- Simultaneously, use your legs to pull them in closer, ensuring they cannot easily regain posture.
2. **Establish Underhook**:
- Release the sleeve grip and swim that arm under your opponent's arm on the same side, establishing an underhook.
- This underhook allows you to have more control over their upper body.
3. **Adjust Your Hips**:
- Shift your hips out slightly towards the underhooked side. This angle helps in applying pressure and setting up the technique.
4. **Lock the Overhook**:
- With the arm that had the cross-collar grip, reach over their back and secure a deep overhook on the underhooked side.
- Clasp your hands together, palm to palm, or use a "Gable grip" for stronger control.
5. **Apply Pressure**:
- Use your legs to pull your opponent's body into you while simultaneously using your underhook and overhook to squeeze.
- Apply pressure by pulling your elbows towards your ribs, compressing your opponent’s torso between your arms and legs.
6. **Finish the Submission**:
- Continue to apply consistent pressure by tightening your grip and pulling in with your legs.
- The submission comes from the compression on their ribs, causing discomfort and potential submission.
## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
- The underhook is crucial for control and pressure application.
- Maintain tight control with your legs to prevent your opponent from posturing up or escaping.
- The overhook should be deep and secure, ensuring maximum compression.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Failing to break your opponent’s posture effectively can lead to loss of control.
- Not angling your hips correctly can reduce the pressure applied.
- Loose grips on the underhook or overhook will make the submission ineffective.
