About This Technique

Dragon Sleeper Description

The Dragon Sleeper is a headlock submission technique often used in professional wrestling. However, it can also be adapted into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It's characterized by trapping the opponent's head and arm from a variety of positions and applying pressure to elicit a tap out.

Possible Positions

  • Standing
  • Back Mount

Japanese Name

Step-by-Step Instructions (Performed from Back Mount)

Setup

  1. **Create an Anchor: **

    • Start by taking your opponent's back. Secure the seat belt grip, ensuring you have control.
  2. **Trap an Arm: **

    • From the back, thread one of your arms under your opponent's armpit, securing it with a tight over-hook.

Execution

  1. **Position your Body: **

    • Transition to a controlling side position, keeping your chest close to their back. This sets up the adjustment crucial for a clean dragon sleeper.
  2. Head Control:

    • Slide your free hand under your opponent's chin while maintaining the over-hook to their arm.
  3. **Secure the Grip: **

    • With your chin-hand, grab your own over-hooked wrist to solidify your hold.
  4. Apply Pressure:

    • Gently pull upwards with your chin-hand while simultaneously using your torso to push down on their back.
    • Be sure to apply the pressure gradually to both control and protect your training partner during practice.

Finishing

  1. Ensure Opponent’s Discomfort:

    • As their head gets trapped in your armpit, their chin should be elevated above their body level.
    • Their arm is still secured, limiting counter-movements or defense attempts.
  2. Secure the Tap:

    • Finish by applying consistent pressure with controlled force, enough to prompt an opponent's tap out due to pressure and discomfort. Always ensure that practicing partners communicate openly about the application's safety.

Key Points and Safety Measures

  • **Maintain Control: ** Your back control throughout the technique is crucial. Maintain it to prevent escapes.
  • **Steady Application: ** Apply pressure steadily to prevent unnecessary injury. Communicate with your partner in practice sessions for comfort and safety.

How to Execute

# Dragon Sleeper from Back Mount in BJJ

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: You are in the back mount position, with your opponent's back against your chest. Your legs are hooked around your opponent's waist in either a regular back mount with hooks or a body triangle for additional control.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Secure a seatbelt grip, where one arm goes over your opponent's shoulder and the other under their opposite arm, clasping your hands together.

## Steps
1. **Establish Control**: Ensure you have a tight back mount, keeping your chest close to your opponent's back and maintaining your hooks or body triangle to control their movement.

2. **Open the Opponent's Neck**: Use the arm that is over your opponent's shoulder (the choking arm) to peel your opponent's chin up slightly, creating space around their neck. Be subtle and controlled to avoid alerting them to your intentions.

3. **Thread the Arm**: With the hand of your choking arm, slide it under your opponent's chin and across their throat. This is similar to setting up a rear-naked choke initially, but instead, you will aim to loop your arm further.

4. **Position the Arm for the Dragon Sleeper**: Continue to thread your arm deeper, aiming to bring the inside of your elbow in line with your opponent’s jaw. Your hand should go past their neck and ideally reach around to touch your own chest or shoulder area.

5. **Secure the Choking Arm**: Using your free arm, reach up and grab hold of your choking arm's wrist. This not only secures the choking mechanism but also allows more pressure and control.

6. **Apply the Choke**: To apply the choke, squeeze your elbows together while simultaneously pulling your opponent’s head backward slightly with your chest and squeezing your legs to prevent them from escaping. Focus on tightening the loop around their neck using your entire upper body.

7. **Adjust as Necessary**: If your opponent resists or tries to defend, adjust your grip and pressure, ensuring that your arm remains snug around their throat.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Keep your chest tight against your opponent’s back at all times to maintain control.
  - Use your entire upper body to apply the choke, not just your arms.
  - The tighter the loop around the neck, the more effective the choke.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Allowing space between your chest and your opponent’s back, which can give them room to escape.
  - Not securing your choking arm with your free hand, which can lead to a weak submission attempt.
  - Forgetting to control your opponent’s body with your hooks or body triangle, leading to a loss of position.
