Lapel Sleeve Lasso Technique
Description
The lapel sleeve lasso is a versatile technique often used to control and frustrate opponents in a modern BJJ setting. By utilizing your opponent's lapel and sleeve grip while intertwining your leg, you can create a dynamic grip setup to either attack or prepare for sweeps.
Position:
- Position: Open Guard
- Japanese Name: N/A
Top or Bottom:
- Position: Bottom
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Setup:
-
Establish Open Guard:
- Start in an open guard position with your back on the mat.
- Your hips should be mobile to facilitate fluid leg movements.
-
Grip the Sleeve:
- Using your right hand, grip your opponent's sleeve on their right arm.
- Secure your thumb outside, fingers curled to create a strong grip.
-
Grab the Lapel:
- With your left hand, reach across and grab the opponent's right lapel.
- Pull the lapel downwards towards you, aiming for control and to off-balance.
-
Create the Lasso:
- Lift your left leg and thread it between your opponent's right arm and side.
- Curl your left leg around their right arm like a hook, bringing your left foot over their bicep and knee towards your body.
- The goal is to control their arm's range of motion with your shin in contact with their arm.
Execution:
-
Control and Frustrate:
- Utilize the lapel to maintain close proximity, ensuring they can't posture up.
- Ensure that your grips on the sleeve and lapel remain tight.
-
Sweep or Attack Options:
- Sweep: Use their unbalanced state to sweep them to the side by pushing with your lassoed leg while pulling on the sleeve.
- Submission Prowess: Start setting up triangles or omoplatas from the lasso position:
- For a triangle, release the lapel grip, use your right hand to control their other sleeve, and swing your right leg over, locking it under your knee.
- For an omoplata, move the shin deeper, rotate your hips to get perpendicular to your opponent, and secure their arm with your leg.
Tips:
- Tight Grips: Maintain strong grips on the sleeve and lapel to effectively control posture.
- Flexible Hips: Keep your hips active and adaptable — this allows fluid transitions into sweeps or submissions.
- Balance Your Weight: Focus on distributing your opponent’s weight across different points of their body by alternating pressure between lapel and lasso grips.
Continuous practice of the lapel sleeve lasso will increase proficiency in controlling your opponent, setting the stage for sweeps and submissions in a dynamic and evolving grappling exchange.
How to Execute
# Lapel Sleeve Lasso from Open Guard
## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in an open guard position with your back on the mat, facing your opponent who is on their knees or in a combat base.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**:
- Secure a grip on your opponent's lapel with one hand, ideally your right hand.
- With your opposite hand (left hand), establish a sleeve grip on your opponent's right arm.
- Your legs should be in a position to pivot and move freely, with one foot ready to lasso and the other foot to control distance.
## Steps
1. **Create Space**: Use your foot on the opponent's hip to create space and adjust your angle slightly to one side (towards your gripping side, typically right).
2. **Lasso the Leg**:
- Bring your left leg over your opponent's right arm and thread it under, hooking your foot around their upper arm or shoulder. This is the lasso hook.
- Keep your left foot active and ensure it's wrapped tightly to prevent the opponent from retracting their arm.
3. **Adjust Your Position**:
- Shift your hips slightly towards your lassoed side (left) to create more control and mobility in your guard.
- Use your right foot on the opponent's hip or thigh to maintain distance and control.
4. **Secure the Lapel**:
- With your right hand maintaining a strong grip on their lapel, pull the opponent slightly forward to break their posture and keep them off balance.
- Ensure your right arm is positioned across your body for added structure and leverage.
5. **Control and Attack Options**:
- Maintain constant tension in the lassoed arm, using your leg and grips to control their posture.
- From here, you can transition to various attacks such as triangle chokes, omoplatas, or sweeps by manipulating your opponent's posture and balance.
## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
- Keep your lasso leg active and tight to prevent your opponent from withdrawing their arm easily.
- Maintain a strong lapel grip to control your opponent's posture effectively.
- Use your hips actively to adjust angles and enhance control.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Allowing your lasso leg to become loose, which makes it easy for the opponent to escape.
- Neglecting to control the opponent's posture with the lapel grip, resulting in a loss of leverage and control.
- Failing to adjust your hips and angle, which can reduce the effectiveness of your guard and attack options.
