About This Technique

Description:

Harai Goshi is a classic Judo throw that translates to "Sweeping Hip Throw" in English. This dynamic technique is highly effective when used in a grappling context and can leave opponents off balance and vulnerable. While it's primarily a standing technique, it can also be integrated into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training, particularly within a standing or upright tactical scenario.

Japanese Name:

  • Harai Goshi

Top or Bottom Position:

  • Top

Position:

  • Standing

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Grips and Setup:

  1. Secure a grip: Begin by establishing a classic Judo grip. Use your right hand to grip your opponent's left collar (or Gi), and your left hand to control their right sleeve.

  2. Engage proper stance: Assume a strong stance, placing your right leg slightly forward. Keep your balance centered, maintaining a low and strong posture.

  3. Off-balance your opponent: Use a small footwork adjustment to pull your opponent forward and slightly to your right. This action, known as "Kuzushi," is crucial for off-balance and setting up the throw.

Performing the Throw:

  1. Pivot and position your hip: Turn sharply on the balls of your feet, swinging your right hip into your opponent's belt area, as if you're going to sit into their lap. Your right foot should step in front of their right foot.

  2. Swing and sweep: Simultaneously, with your hip in place, execute a swift sweeping motion using your right leg. The goal is to sweep across your opponent's right leg, catching it with the back of your inner thigh or calf.

  3. Execute the throw: Amplify the sweeping motion, using both your hip pivot and grip control. Aim to lift and turn your opponent over your hip and back, following through with the movement fluidly.

  4. Land in a dominant position: As your opponent falls, control the descent and aim to land in a dominant position such as "Kesa Gatame" (scarf hold) or "Side Control," adjusting for BJJ contexts accordingly.

Key Points:

  • Proper grip and balance breaking are critical to executing Harai Goshi successfully.
  • Ensure synchronization between the hip pivot and leg sweep for maximum efficacy.
  • Continuous practice is vital for mastering the timing and balance needed for this technique.

How to Execute

# Harai Goshi from Standing Position in BJJ

## Setup

- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in a standard standing posture facing your opponent. Ensure you are balanced and have a good base, with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Secure a collar grip with your right hand on your opponent's right collar. With your left hand, establish a grip on your opponent's right sleeve or arm. This grip configuration is essential to control your opponent's upper body and facilitate the throw.

## Steps

1. **Establish Kuzushi (Off-Balancing)**:
   - Use your grips to pull your opponent slightly forward and to your left, breaking their balance. This off-balancing is key to making the throw easier.
   - Simultaneously, step in with your left foot to close the distance, positioning it slightly inside and in front of your opponent’s right foot.

2. **Positioning Your Body**:
   - Rotate your upper body counterclockwise to further off-balance your opponent. This motion is facilitated by pulling with your right hand and pushing slightly with your left hand.
   - Step with your right foot behind your opponent’s right leg, ensuring your back is close to your opponent’s chest. Your right leg should be straight and positioned just outside your opponent's right leg.

3. **Executing the Sweep**:
   - Pivot on your left foot and swing your right leg forward in a sweeping motion. Your right leg should make contact with the outside of your opponent's right thigh.
   - Use your hips and the momentum from the swing to lift and turn your opponent over your hip, directing them toward the ground.

4. **Completing the Throw**:
   - As your opponent begins to go over, maintain control with your grips to guide their fall and ensure they land on their back.
   - Follow through with your hips and keep your posture upright to maintain control, ready to transition into a dominant ground position.

## Key Points

- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - The off-balancing (kuzushi) is crucial for the success of Harai Goshi. Make sure your opponent is leaning slightly forward with their weight on their toes before executing the throw.
  - Keep your core engaged and maintain a strong connection with your grips throughout the technique.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Avoid bending over or leaning forward excessively; this weakens your posture and makes the throw less effective.
  - Do not sweep too early; ensure your opponent is properly off-balanced before attempting the leg sweep.
  - Ensure your sweeping leg remains straight and strong; a bent leg will reduce the power and effectiveness of the throw.
