About This Technique
Sit-up Sweep in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The Sit-up Sweep is a fundamental technique typically executed from Closed Guard. This sweep is effective in transitioning from a defensive to an offensive position by using the element of surprise and leverage.
Position:
- Closed Guard
Steps to Perform the Sit-up Sweep:
-
Establish the Closed Guard:
- Begin by lying on your back with your legs wrapped around your opponent's waist and your feet locked together. Your opponent should be in your closed guard.
-
Grip Setup:
- Secure a cross grip on your opponent's gi with your right hand, aiming for a solid hold on their sleeve or collar. Adjust your grip for maximum control and movement tolerance.
-
**Prepare Your Base: **
- Push off with the balls of your planted feet to create a dynamic posture. Open your guard and slide your left hand to post your bent hand on the mat behind you.
-
**Sit-up Movement: **
- Use your grips and foot plant to propel yourself upward into a sitting position. Keep your torso upright and maintain tension in your guard leg muscles for control. Your right (gripping) hip should be forward.
-
Dominant Hand Underhook:
- Release the closed guard entirely (if not done), then reach your free arm across the opponent and underhook, aiming to cup the back of your opponent's left arm or shoulder, ensuring your arm is tight and just under their armpit.
-
**Execute the Sweep: **
- Drive strongly with your planted hand (left) off the mat while maintaining a pushing force to your opponent's midsection using your guard legs.
- Simultaneously pull your opponent's arm toward you, directing your weight over your sitting shoulder and back down towards the ground.
-
Finish the Sweep:
- As your opponent starts to fall sideways, follow through by rolling yourself over onto your knees, ending in a top dominative position, ideally inside their guard.
-
**Secure Top Position: **
- Once on top, establish your base. Maintain pressure through your hip, and stabilize yourself by setting up a firm posture to prevent a counter.
Key Points:
- Timing and quick movement are crucial for successfully executing the sit-up sweep.
- Keep your hips aligned to drive adequate force during the sweep.
- Engage your core to enjoy leverage and control throughout the technique.
Practical Tips:
- Practice the base establishment and grip gaining separately to refine the technique's efficiency.
- Experiment with other control grips such as collar grips or belt for different scenarios.
How to Execute
# Sit-up Sweep from Closed Guard
## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in the closed guard position. You are on your back with your legs wrapped around your opponent's waist, and your feet crossed at the ankles.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Secure your opponent's wrist with a cross grip (e.g., your right hand controls their left wrist). At the same time, use your other hand to reach over their head and control the back of their neck or shoulder.
## Steps
1. **Break the Posture**: Use your grips to pull your opponent forward, breaking their posture. This action will make it easier to perform the sweep by bringing their weight forward.
2. **Open Your Guard**: Release your crossed ankles and open your guard, placing your feet on the mat. Keep your knees pinching slightly to maintain control over your opponent's hips.
3. **Sit Up**: Use your abdominal muscles to sit up towards your opponent, bringing your upper body close to theirs. As you sit up, release the neck/shoulder grip and base your free hand behind you on the mat for support.
4. **Control the Opponent's Arm**: With the hand that was controlling their wrist, pull their arm across your body towards your opposite shoulder. This helps to off-balance your opponent and prevent them from posting their hand to stop the sweep.
5. **Hips and Angle**: As you sit up and pull the arm, use your hips to move slightly to the side you're sweeping towards. Your hips should be close to your opponent's, creating a strong angle for the sweep.
6. **Execute the Sweep**: Use the foot on the opposite side to the direction you're sweeping (the same side as the arm you're pulling) to push off the mat. Simultaneously, use your other hand to pull yourself and your opponent over, maintaining control of their arm.
7. **Finish in Mount**: As you complete the sweep, follow through by moving your hips over theirs, ending up in the mount position. Secure the position by establishing a solid base with your knees wide and feet tucked under their hips.
## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**: Keep your opponent's arm tightly controlled across your body to prevent them from posting and stopping the sweep. Use your hips efficiently to create the angle needed for the sweep.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Failing to control the opponent's arm can result in them posting and blocking the sweep.
- Not sitting up close enough can lead to losing the leverage needed for the sweep.
- Neglecting to maintain a solid base in mount can result in your opponent escaping or reversing the position.
