About This Technique

Scissor Sweep

The Scissor Sweep is a fundamental Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) technique predominantly utilized from the Closed Guard position. This sweep aims to off-balance your opponent, enabling a reversal of the position where you move from the bottom to the top.

Detailed Steps:

  1. Establish Control:

    • Begin in the Closed Guard position, with your legs wrapped around your opponent's waist.
    • Use your hand to grab a cross collar grip on your opponent’s gi (left hand to their right collar or vice versa) while keeping a tight grip on it to control their posture.
    • With your other hand, grip their sleeve or wrist, depending on the level of control you can manage.
  2. Open the Guard:

    • Open your guard by unlocking your feet, ideally keeping the grip you've established on the collar and wrist intact for control.
    • Your movements should be fluid, shifting from holding them with your legs to repositioning them.
  3. Create Space and Setup:

    • As you unlock your guard, post the foot on the same side as your collar grip on your opponent's hip.
    • Simultaneously, shrink your hips down, moving away from your opponent to create space.
    • Lay back slightly and place your non-posting leg across your opponent's torso; the shin should align across their abdomen.
    • Your other knee should rest behind their knee joint, positioning your shin like a scissor shape (hence the name).
  4. Execute the Sweep:

    • With your grips still intact, pull down with the collar grip toward your chest to break their posture further forward.
    • Simultaneously, pull with the sleeve grip to tilt your opponent.
    • Scissor your legs:
      • The leg across your opponent's abdomen pushes while the other leg pulls across the floor or slightly elevates, creating a rotating motion.
    • Keep your core engaged to enhance the transfer of force through your legs.
  5. Transition to Mount:

    • As your opponent tips over, follow their motion fluidly to maintain control.
    • Slide your bottom leg through and simultaneously bring your supporting leg up.
    • Settle into the top position while securing a dominant position, ideally the Mount.
  6. Maintain Control:

    • Stabilize yourself high on the mount, keeping a solid posture.
    • Prepared to counter any of your opponent's attempts to regain control.

Tips:

  • Keep your movements tight and controlled to prevent counters.
  • If possible, practice drilling the motion slowly to focus on precision and timing.
  • Use the grips effectively for balance and directional force.

Common Mistakes:

  • Failing to break the opponent’s posture effectively, which leads to weak application of the sweep.
  • Incorrect scissoring motion not allowing a proper off-balance.
  • Loose leg positioning giving too much space for a counter.

How to Execute

  1. Establish the Closed Guard Start by establishing a closed guard position. This is where you are on your back and your opponent is in between your legs. Wrap your legs around your opponent's waist and cross your feet behind their back. Make sure to keep your knees close to your body, this makes it harder for your opponent to escape.

  2. Secure Grips Next, secure your grips on your opponent. Use your left hand to firmly grip your opponent's right sleeve at the wrist. Use your right hand to grip your opponent's collar on the left side. This cross grip control is important to keep your opponent's posture broken down and to set up the sweep.

  3. Open Your Guard Once you have secured your grips, open your guard by uncrossing your feet. Plant your left foot on the floor, and use it to shift your hips slightly to the left, putting more of your weight onto your right side.

  4. Position Your Right Knee Move your right knee across your opponent's body and place it on their chest. This will act as a barrier, preventing them from moving forward and maintaining their balance.

  5. Kick Out with Your Left Leg Simultaneously, kick out with your left leg. This should be a scissoring motion - as your right knee pushes into your opponent's chest, your left leg should swing out and away from your body.

  6. Execute the Sweep As you kick out with your left leg, use your grips to pull your opponent towards you. This, combined with your scissoring legs, should off-balance your opponent and roll them onto their back.

  7. Move into Mount Position Finally, follow your opponent as they fall, moving from your back onto your knees. This will allow you to move into a mount position, where you can begin to work your attack.

Note: Always remember to practice these moves under the supervision of a trained BJJ instructor. BJJ is a physical sport and incorrect application of techniques can potentially lead to injuries.
