About This Technique
Pendulum Sweep
The Pendulum Sweep, also known as the "Flower Sweep," is a fundamental and highly effective technique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). Typically executed from the Closed Guard position, it is especially useful against opponents trying to maintain a strong base.
Position:
- Closed Guard
Japanese Name:
- N/A
Step-by-step Instructions:
-
Starting Position:
- Begin in the closed guard with your opponent on their knees.
- Secure a tight overhook grip on one of your opponent's arms (for this example, we'll use their right arm).
-
Control the Arm:
- Use your right arm to overhook your opponent’s right arm.
- At the same time, grab the sleeve or wrist to ensure a strong control.
-
Break Their Posture:
- Pull their right arm across your chest, breaking their posture. This action also moves their weight over your body.
-
Create Angle and Emergency Base:
- Open your guard and use your free left arm to grab the back of your opponent's ankle on their left side.
- Swing your body, creating a pendulum motion: kick your left leg wide to your left and then back towards your right shoulder. This pendulum motion helps in generating the necessary momentum for the sweep.
-
Sweep Execution:
- As your left leg swings back, elevate your hips and sweep their left side with the pendulum motion.
- Roll your opponent over your right shoulder while pulling their left leg, disrupting their base and tipping them over.
-
Secure the Mount:
- As your opponent tips over, maintain your grip on their arm and leg.
- Follow through by rolling over to a dominant mount position with control over their arm or you may choose to transition into an armbar.
Key Details:
- Proper Timing & Balance: Ensure you have broken the opponent's posture. Using the pendulum motion effectively generates the momentum needed.
- Maintain Tight Control: Keep a strong grip on your opponent’s arm and leg to guide them during the sweep.
- Follow Through: When sweeping, always transition immediately to a dominant position or submission for full effectiveness.
By mastering the pendulum sweep, BJJ practitioners can add a powerful technique to their game, one that combines leverage, momentum, and timing for a successful transition to a dominant position. Practice with partners to refine each step and adjust based on variations in opponent resistance.### Training Tips:
- Practice with various opponents to understand different weight shifting.
- Explore side variations in grip placement to adapt the sweep's effectiveness.
How to Execute
Performing the Pendulum Sweep from Closed Guard Position in BJJ
Initial Position
Start in a closed guard position. This is when you are on your back and your legs are wrapped around your opponent's waist, with your ankles crossed behind your opponent's back.
Step 1: Control the Opponent's Arm
Reach up and secure a grip on your opponent's sleeve or wrist on the same side as the direction you plan to sweep. Your other hand should reach around and secure a grip on your opponent's lapel, near their armpit.
Step 2: Break Opponent's Posture
Pull your knees towards your chest while pulling down with your grips to break your opponent's posture, causing them to lean forward.
Step 3: Shift Your Hips
Shift your hips to the side opposite of the direction you plan to sweep.
Step 4: Open Your Guard
Open your guard, placing one foot on your opponent's hip. Your other leg should swing out to the side to generate momentum.
Step 5: Swing Your Leg
Swing your leg in a pendulum motion, using it to help shift your weight and turn your body in the direction of the sweep.
Step 6: Execute the Sweep
As your leg swings back, use the momentum to lift your hips and roll your opponent over, using your grips to assist in the motion.
Step 7: Transition to Mount
As your opponent falls, you should end up on top in the mount position.
Remember, like all BJJ techniques, the pendulum sweep requires practice to perfect. Always practice safely with a partner who is knowledgeable and experienced in BJJ.
