About This Technique

Baseball Bat Choke

The Baseball Bat Choke is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu submission that relies on gi lapels to strangle your opponent. It's called the "baseball bat" choke because the grip resembles how one would hold a baseball bat. The technique can be executed from various positions, though it's most commonly applied from the Knee on Belly or Side Control positions.

Japanese Name

Position (Top/Bottom)

  • Possibility 1: Top Position from Knee on Belly
  • Possibility 2: Top Position from Side Control

Step-By-Step Instructions

From Knee on Belly:

  1. Achieve Knee on Belly Position:

    • Stabilize your knee on the opponent's stomach while keeping your other knee off the ground for balance.
  2. Setup the Grips:

    • With your "lead" hand (closer to your opponent's head), grab the collar nearest to your opponent's neck using a palm-up grip.
    • Slide your "rear" hand under your opponent's neck and grab the far collar using a palm-down grip, similar to holding a baseball bat.
  3. Establish the Choke:

    • Your rear wrist should be under your opponent's chin. Be mindful of maintaining pressure with your lead wrist as you tighten the collar grip.
  4. Apply the Submission:

    • To finish the choke, slide your lead hand towards your opponent's head while simultaneously pulling your rear hand towards your own body.
    • Drop your knee from the belly to the mat for more leverage.
    • Squeeze your elbows together, keeping your grips tight, to push the opponent’s neck against your forearm until they tap.
  5. Escape Countermeasures:

    • Keep your body weight slightly forward and your grips tight to prevent your opponent from bridging or rolling over.

From Side Control:

  1. Establish Side Control:

    • Control the opponent's head and arm while maintaining chest pressure on their torso.
  2. Secure the Initial Grip:

    • With your hand closer to their head, slide under their neck and secure a thumb-in grip on the collar nearest to you.
  3. Adjust the Near Hand Grip:

    • With your free hand, reach under the neck to secure a palm-up grip on the collar, forming a "baseball bat" grip.
  4. Execute the Choke:

    • Transition by tucking your head close to their hip (ideal for positional control), as you squeeze your elbows together to tighten the choke.
    • Keep your elbows to your sides as you slide your grips closer for a tighter squeeze.
  5. Finish the Technique:

    • Continue the pressure and squeezing motion simultaneously until your opponent submits.

Tips

  • Mastering the grip is vital; visualize your grip like holding a baseball bat.
  • It's crucial to keep the opponent’s movement limited by maintaining chest control.

How to Execute

# Baseball Bat Choke from Knee on Belly

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Start in the Knee on Belly position. Your right knee should be on your opponent’s belly, applying pressure, while your left leg is posted out to the side for balance.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Your left hand should grip the collar of your opponent's gi, palm facing up, deep into the near side of their collar. Your right hand should grip the far side collar, palm facing down, similar to holding a baseball bat.

## Steps
1. **Establish Control**: Ensure that your knee is firmly on their belly, applying sufficient pressure to control their movement. Your left hand should already be deep in the collar, palm facing up.

2. **Secure the Second Grip**: With your right hand, reach across and grip the far side collar, palm down. This creates the "baseball bat" grip with your wrists crossed.

3. **Adjust Your Position**: Begin to transition from Knee on Belly to a more north-south position. As you move, ensure your grips remain tight and secure.

4. **Apply Pressure and Finish the Choke**: Drop your chest towards the ground and pull your grips towards you while rotating your wrists. This action will tighten the choke around your opponent’s neck. Your body weight should press down through your chest, adding pressure to the choke.

5. **Maintain Control**: As you apply the choke, ensure your base is stable. Keep your hips low and your balance centered to prevent your opponent from escaping or reversing the position.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Keep your grips tight and deep in the collar to maximize the choke's effectiveness.
  - Use your body weight to apply pressure, not just your arms. This will help conserve energy and increase the choke's efficiency.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Avoid leaving too much space between your chest and your opponent. This can give them an opportunity to escape or defend the choke.
  - Ensure your wrists are properly aligned in the baseball bat grip. Incorrect wrist positioning can weaken the choke and reduce its effectiveness.
  - Do not rush the choke; ensure your grips are set correctly and your position is stable before applying pressure.

By following these steps and key points, you can effectively apply the baseball bat choke from the Knee on Belly position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
