About This Technique
Bread Cutter Choke
The Bread Cutter Choke, sometimes referred to as the "Papercutter Choke," is a powerful gi choke. It's best applied from the side control position.
Position: Side Control
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Establish Side Control:
- Start by securing a solid side control position, making sure to control your opponent's head and arm. Use your chest and shoulder to apply pressure, and maintain good posture to keep your opponent pinned.
- Open the Collar with Your Bottom Hand:
- Use your bottom hand (the hand closest to the mat) to open the far side of your opponent's gi collar. Slide your fingers in to create a good grip, four fingers inside with the thumb outside.
- Grip the Collar with Your Top Hand:
- With your top hand (the hand on your opponent's chest), reach across to grip their lapel or collar under their neck. Aim to position your hand halfway up their neck for leverage.
- Move to North-South Position:
- Transition to a north-south position, maintaining your collar grips. This movement should be smooth and fast to prevent your opponent from escaping or defending.
- Apply the Choke:
- Pull your bottom hand straight across your opponent's neck like slicing bread, while your top hand maintains pressure downwards with the collar grip.
- You should use the blade of your wrist to cut across your opponent's throat.
- Push Down with Your Weight:
- Using your body weight, press down with your shoulder to tighten the choke. Ensure your grips remain secure and there's constant downward pressure through your wrists.
- Finish the Choke:
- Your opponent should feel pressure immediately. Hold your grips firmly and wait until your opponent taps, indicating that the choke is working.
- Be ready to release the choke promptly once your opponent taps to avoid injury.
Key Points to Remember:
- Keep your grips tight at all times.
- Maintain pressure with your shoulder and chest to secure the position.
- Ensure the technique is applied smoothly and controlled.
- Always prioritize your partner's safety during training.
Counter Techniques:
- Defensive Guard Recovery: Your opponent can try to recover guard by creating space with their hips.
- Frame and Shrimp: Your opponent might attempt to frame against your neck or shoulder to shrimp away and escape.
This technique is highly effective as it utilizes leverage and pressure, making it a reliable choice in both training and competition scenarios.
How to Execute
Bread Cutter Choke from Side Control
The Bread Cutter Choke is an effective submission from the side control position, utilizing your opponent's gi to apply pressure to their neck. Follow these steps to perform the technique:
Step 1: Establish Side Control
- •Position yourself: Secure a solid side control on your opponent. Ensure your body is perpendicular to their torso.
- •Control the head: Use your right arm to control your opponent's head by placing it under their neck, with your hand on the far side of their head.
- •Maintain pressure: Keep your left knee close to their hip and your right knee near their shoulder to limit their movement.
Step 2: Secure the Collar Grip
- •Open the collar: Use your left hand to open the opponent's far collar, creating space to insert your grip.
- •Insert grip: Slide your right hand under your opponent's head and grab deep into their far collar with a thumb-in grip. Your fingers should be inside the collar, and your thumb outside.
Step 3: Transition to North-South
- •Move your body: Start transitioning your body towards a north-south position. This allows you to create better leverage for the choke.
- •Maintain control: As you move, ensure your right arm remains tight against their neck, maintaining collar control.
Step 4: Secure the Second Grip
- •Create space: Use your left hand to push down on the opponent's near shoulder or arm to create space.
- •Insert hand: Slide your left hand under the opponent's arm (the one closest to you) and grab the fabric of their gi at their near shoulder or close to their armpit. Your grip should be palm down.
Step 5: Apply the Choke
- •Drop your weight: Apply pressure by dropping your chest down onto your opponent’s chest.
- •Pull and squeeze: Pull with your right hand on the collar while simultaneously pushing with your left hand on the gi. This action applies pressure to the opponent's neck.
- •Finish the choke: Continue to apply pressure until the opponent taps. Ensure you maintain control and adjust your grips if necessary to increase the choke's effectiveness.
Step 6: Maintain Control
- •Be aware: Even if the choke is successful, be ready to transition to another position or maintain control to prevent escapes.
- •Practice safely: Always practice submissions with control and be attentive to your training partner's safety.
By following these steps, you can effectively apply the Bread Cutter Choke from side control. Practice this technique with a partner to refine your grips and pressure application.
