About This Technique

Kimura from Side Control

The Kimura lock, a powerful shoulder joint lock, is a staple technique frequently employed by practitioners of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to unbalance an opponent and secure a submission. When executed from the Side Control position, it can effectively isolate and attack the opponent's arm, leveraging your weight and positional advantage.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Establish Side Control

    • Position: Begin in a secure Side Control, where you are perpendicular to your opponent. Keep an underhook with your far arm and aim to control either the opponent’s hip nearest to you with your other arm.
  2. Pummel the Near-side Arm

    • Use a cross-face pressure and shift slightly to off-balance your opponent, creating space to move.
    • Drive your cross-face arm (arm closest to their head) under their far arm, grabbing their wrist with a grip akin to holding an ice-pick.
  3. Secure the Kimura Grip

    • Release the underhook and quickly grab your own wrist, forming a figure-four grip with your wrist and their wrist. This can be done by threading your arm set up across the bridge of their neck for leverage.
  4. Position Adjustment

    • Drop your far leg back to maintain base. You can consider going knee on belly or maintaining stability while transitioning your body back over the opponent’s chest.
  5. Apply the Lock

    • Elevate their wrist off the mat ensuring their elbow is isolated.
    • While maintaining the grip, lift their wrist towards their head while simultaneously rotating it towards their back. Ensure their elbow stays flat on the mat to not allow them to roll out of the position.
  6. Finish the Submission

    • Apply pressure and torque gently but firmly by lifting their wrist to their head while their elbow remains glued to the mat. This will create tension in the shoulder joint and force a tap.

Tips

  • Keep your weight distributed: To prevent counters or escapes, ensure that your weight is focused and adjusted towards the opponent using your chest.
  • Watch out for their reversal: Be aware of bridging or hip escapes and adjust your base and grip accordingly.

Common Mistakes

  • Not keeping a tight grip: A loose grip may allow the opponent's arm to slip through, avoiding submission.
  • Poor body positioning: Lack of base adjustment can lead to losing control, which may lead to a reversal.

Important Notes

  • Safety Consideration: Always apply joint locks gently during practice to prevent injury.
  • Drill Regularly: Practice drills including transitions and escapes from side control to perfect the technique.

How to Execute

Kimura from Side Control

Performing the Kimura from side control is a fundamental technique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that can be very effective when executed correctly. Below are the detailed step-by-step instructions to perform this submission:

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Establish Side Control:

    • Start in a strong side control position. Your body should be perpendicular to your opponent’s body. Your right hand should be under their neck, and your left hand should be under their far arm, with your weight distributed evenly.
  2. Secure Control:

    • Maintain pressure on your opponent using your chest. Keep your hips low and stay connected to their body. Use your shoulder pressure to keep their head pinned to the mat.
  3. Position Your Arms:

    • With your right hand, grip your opponent’s left wrist (if you’re on their right side) while maintaining your base.
    • Slide your left arm under their left arm (the arm you are attacking), threading your arm through so that your left hand can grip your own right wrist. This forms a figure-four grip.
  4. Isolate the Arm:

    • Pull your opponent’s arm away from their body using the figure-four grip to isolate their shoulder.
    • Ensure that your elbows are tight to your body, and keep the grip close to your chest.
  5. Shift Your Hips:

    • Move your left knee towards your opponent’s head and your right knee towards their hip. This will give you better leverage and control over their body.
    • Alternatively, you can step over their head with your left leg to prevent them from rolling towards you and escaping.
  6. Apply the Submission:

    • With the figure-four grip tightened, lift your opponent’s elbow towards the ceiling, while simultaneously pushing their wrist towards the back of their head.
    • Ensure that you maintain control with your body weight over their torso to prevent them from turning into you or escaping.
  7. Finish the Kimura:

    • Continue to lift the elbow and rotate their wrist until they tap out or you achieve the submission. Be mindful of the pressure applied to avoid injuring your training partner.
  8. Maintain Control:

    • After the submission, release the hold carefully and return to a dominant position to maintain control over the opponent.

By following these steps and practicing the technique with a partner, you can effectively execute the Kimura from side control. Always remember to train safely and respect your partner's limits during practice.
