How to Execute

# De La Riva Guard Sweep from Open Guard

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in the open guard position with your opponent standing. Your back should be slightly off the mat, with your hips mobile to allow for effective guard play.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**:
  - Your right hand grips your opponent's right ankle.
  - Your left hand grips your opponent's left sleeve or collar, depending on the variation and opponent's posture.
  - Your right leg hooks behind your opponent's right leg, with your right foot placed on their hip or thigh for control.
  - Your left leg should be free, ready to assist in creating leverage and off-balancing your opponent.

## Steps
1. **Create Distance and Off-Balance**: Use your right foot on your opponent's hip or thigh to push and create distance. Simultaneously pull with your right hand on their ankle to disrupt their base.
2. **Control and Positioning**: With your left hand, maintain control of your opponent's sleeve or collar to prevent them from advancing or regaining balance.
3. **Hook and Elevate**: Deepen your right leg's hook on the inside of your opponent's right leg, ensuring your foot is active and applying pressure against their hip or thigh.
4. **Sweep Execution**: Use your left leg to hook inside your opponent's left leg, or place it on the ground for additional leverage. Pull with your upper body while using your legs to tilt your opponent forward and to the side.
5. **Follow Through**: As your opponent falls, maintain your grips and use your legs to guide their descent. Follow them to the mat, transitioning to a dominant position, such as side control or mount.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Maintain a strong grip on your opponent's ankle and sleeve/collar throughout the sweep to control their balance.
  - Use your legs actively; your right leg should constantly apply pressure to keep them off-balance.
  - Timing is crucial. Execute the sweep as soon as you feel your opponent's balance shift.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Losing the grip on the ankle, allowing your opponent to step back and recover their balance.
  - Not creating enough space with your legs, resulting in a weak sweep attempt.
  - Forgetting to follow your opponent after the sweep, missing the opportunity to secure a dominant position.
