Drop Seoi Nage from Standing Position in BJJ
Setup
- •
Initial Position Details: Begin in a standing position with you and your opponent facing each other. Maintain a balanced stance with feet shoulder-width apart to ensure stability and mobility.
- •
Grips and Controls Needed:
- •Use your dominant hand to secure a firm grip on your opponent’s same-side sleeve near the elbow.
- •With your other hand, grip your opponent’s opposite-side lapel, maintaining a strong hold to control their upper body.
Steps
- •
Breaking Balance (Kuzushi):
- •Pull your opponent forward with your sleeve grip while simultaneously using your lapel grip to lift and guide them.
- •Aim to disrupt their balance by pulling them onto their toes, creating the opportunity for the throw.
- •
Entry (Tsukuri):
- •Step forward with your non-dominant foot, placing it between your opponent’s feet.
- •Pivot on your lead foot and bring your dominant foot around, positioning it parallel to your non-dominant foot. Your back should be aligned with your opponent’s chest, and your hips should be lower than theirs.
- •
Dropping to Knees:
- •Lower your hips by dropping to your knees. This should be done smoothly and quickly to maintain the momentum of the throw.
- •Ensure that your back remains straight and your posture upright as you drop.
- •
Execution (Kake):
- •Pull your opponent over your shoulder by continuing the upward motion with your lapel grip.
- •Simultaneously, use your sleeve grip to guide and control their arm, ensuring they cannot post or counter-balance the throw.
- •
Completion:
- •As your opponent is lifted over your shoulder, maintain control and guide them to the mat with a smooth motion.
- •Follow through by maintaining grips and positioning yourself to transition into a dominant position, such as side control or mount, upon landing.
Key Points
- •
Important Details to Remember:
- •Maintain a strong, consistent grip throughout the technique to control your opponent’s movement.
- •Keep your hips lower than your opponent’s as you drop to ensure effective leverage and control.
- •
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- •Failing to break your opponent’s balance effectively, which can lead to a stalled throw.
- •Dropping too far away from your opponent, which reduces leverage and the effectiveness of the throw.
- •Forgetting to maintain upright posture when dropping, which can lead to loss of balance and control.
