Steps to Perform Standing Base Up

From Turtle Position

  1. Establish a Base:

    • Begin in the turtle position, ensuring your weight is evenly distributed over your knees and elbows.
    • Keep tightening your core to stay compact.
  2. Create a Post:

    • Post your dominant arm on the ground just outside your torso.
    • Your palm should be flat, fingers spread for balance.
  3. Lift Your Opposite Leg:

    • Shift your weight slightly to the side of your posted arm.
    • Drive your opposite leg forward, bringing your knee close to your opposite foot while maintaining contact with the ground.
  4. Stand Slowly:

    • Using the leverage from your posted hand and planted foot, lift your hips.
    • Continue to rise by guiding your weight onto your front leg, further maintaining a stable posture.
  5. Protect Your Head and Guard:

    • As you stand, immediately bring your arms into a protective guard.
    • Keep your eyes on your opponent and be ready to defend oneself or reengage.

From Seated / Butt Scoot Position

  1. Position Your Hands:

    • Sit with your legs slightly bent, feet on the floor.
    • Place your dominant hand behind you next to your hip, palm flat.
  2. Raise Your Hips:

    • Slightly lean back, using your posted hand for support.
    • Raise your hips off the mat, creating a tripod base with your feet and hand.
  3. Slide Your Foot Back:

    • Slide your free leg back until your foot is underneath you.
    • This forms a crouched, defensive position.
  4. Rise with Guard Up:

    • Push off your back hand while bringing your torso upright.
    • As you stand, bring both hands up for protection, returning to a ready stance.

Key Focus Points

  • Balance and Control: Avoid rushing the motion; focus on maintaining balance throughout.
  • Defensive Awareness: Always be mindful of your opponent’s position and potential threats.
  • Smooth Transition: Practice the motion repeatedly to maintain smoothness and control during real application.

The "Standing Base Up" technique is a vital skill in BJJ, ensuring practitioners can transition from a grounded position to standing without compromising defense or opening themselves to attacks.

How to Execute

# Standing Base Up from Turtle Position in BJJ

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**:
  - You are in the turtle position on the mat. Your opponent may be on top or beside you, attempting to control you or attack.
  - Your knees and elbows are on the ground, with your head tucked in to protect from chokes and strikes.

- **Grips and Controls Needed**:
  - Ensure your elbows are close to your knees, creating a compact structure.
  - Keep your hands ready to post on the mat if needed for balance.
  - Protect your neck by tucking your chin and keeping your arms close.

## Steps

1. **Post One Foot**:
   - From the turtle position, choose a side to start your movement.
   - Bring your same-side knee up to post your foot flat on the mat. Your foot should be placed close to your body for stability.

2. **Post the Same-Side Hand**:
   - Post your same-side hand on the mat by extending your arm. This will help create a base and support for the next movement.
   - Ensure your fingers are spread wide for a stable grip on the mat.

3. **Lift Your Hips**:
   - Use your posted hand and foot to lift your hips off the ground.
   - Rotate your body slightly towards the posted side, creating space underneath your opposite leg.

4. **Slide the Opposite Leg Through**:
   - Slide your opposite leg under your body, bringing your knee forward and through the space created by lifting your hips.
   - This movement helps you shift your weight and prepare to stand.

5. **Stand Up**:
   - Once your opposite leg is through, bring your base foot (the one that was posted) underneath your body to stand.
   - As you stand, maintain a low, balanced posture to prevent your opponent from easily pushing you back down.

6. **Establish a Defensive Stance**:
   - Once you are on your feet, immediately establish a defensive stance.
   - Keep your arms up to protect your head and maintain balance with your legs slightly bent.

## Key Points

- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Keep your movement smooth and controlled to avoid giving your opponent opportunities to attack.
  - Always be ready to adjust your balance with your hands and feet.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Do not lift your hips too high, as this can create openings for your opponent.
  - Avoid standing up too quickly without maintaining balance, which can lead to being swept or taken down.
  - Keep your chin tucked and arms close to prevent chokes and control attempts.
