About This Technique

Loop Choke Technique

The Loop Choke is a highly effective gi choke in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, often surprising opponents with its speed and efficiency. It is mainly executed when in a guard position, particularly the Closed Guard, Open Guard, or while transitioning during a scramble.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Establish Grip:

    • Closed Guard: Begin from a closed guard position. Secure your opponent's lapel with a four-finger grip (thumb out) on their collar, ensuring a solid hold with your dominant hand.
    • Alternative Positions: You can also initiate this grip from open guard or while standing.
  2. Create Space:

    • Use your legs to create a slight push to make the opponent react and possibly post with their hands. This helps in creating the necessary space to advance with the choke.
  3. Loop the Arm:

    • With your opposite hand (the one not gripping the collar), reach towards your opponent's opposite side head (ear level) and loop your arm under their neck.
    • This motion should bring your arm over their head and create a 'loop'.
  4. Establish the Choke:

    • As your arm loops over, thread your other hand under their chin.
    • Let your arm slide through the loop formed, simultaneously bringing the wrist area of the gripping hand ready to choke.
  5. Tighten the Grip:

    • Pull the collar towards you with your gripping hand while your other arm stays tight over their head, pressing down on the back of their head.
    • This should apply a gradual pressure via the lapel to render the choke effective.
  6. Finish the Choke:

    • Position your head close to their shoulder, almost ear to ear.
    • Exert pressure by pulling your collar gripping arm slightly towards your chest while pushing down your looped arm on their head.
    • Adjust your leg position slightly if necessary to increase control/knee inside if closing gaps helps apply added pressure.
    • Hold and maintain pressure until you feel a significant tap or verbal cue from your opponent.

Tips:

  • Ensure your grips remain secure throughout the maneuver.
  • Maintain good posture and leverage with leg positioning.
  • Apply the necessary pressure gradually, enabling control over the choke time.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving too much slack in the collar grip.
  • Not pulling the gripping hand enough to make the choke tight and effective.
  • Losing control over the opponent's posture, allowing them to posture up or break free.

Japanese Name

  • The Japanese name for the Loop Choke is unknown and is typically referred to by its English or Brazilian name.

_ The Loop Choke is a highly versatile weapon, often catching opponents off-guard when applied with precision and creativity. As with many BJJ techniques, practice and recognize the openings for its application within live rolls._

How to Execute

# Loop Choke from Closed Guard

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: You are on your back in the closed guard position with your opponent inside your guard.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Ensure your guard is closed tightly around your opponent's waist. Your hands should be free to establish grips.

## Steps
1. **Open the Lapel**:
   - With your right hand, open your opponent's left lapel to create some slack. This will make it easier to feed your grip through.

2. **Establish the Collar Grip**:
   - Using your right hand, reach over your opponent’s head and grip deep into their left lapel with your thumb inside, fingers outside. The grip should be firm but comfortable.

3. **Create an Angle**:
   - Use your left hand to control your opponent’s right wrist or sleeve, pulling it across your body. At the same time, pivot your hips to the left to create an angle.

4. **Sit Up and Loop the Arm**:
   - As you maintain the collar grip, sit up slightly and bring your left arm over your opponent’s neck, looping it around their head. This will bring their head down, closer to your chest.

5. **Lock the Choke**:
   - Drop your left elbow towards your own left hip to tighten the choke. Keep pulling with your right hand to maintain pressure on the neck.

6. **Apply Pressure**:
   - Close your guard tightly around your opponent’s waist and apply downward pressure with your left arm. Simultaneously, pull upwards with your right hand to cinch the choke tighter.

7. **Finish the Choke**:
   - Keep your body tight and apply steady pressure until your opponent taps.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Ensure your grip on the collar is deep and secure. This is crucial for the effectiveness of the choke.
  - Keep your hips active; use them to create the necessary angle for the choke.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Avoid leaving too much slack in the lapel; a loose grip makes the choke ineffective.
  - Don’t neglect to control your opponent’s posture; without control, they can easily posture up and escape.
  - Ensure your opponent’s head is pulled downwards; if their head remains upright, the choke will be less effective.
