About This Technique

Gift Wrap Technique

The "Gift Wrap" is often utilized to transition and control your opponent efficiently, especially from dominant positions. It acts as both a control and submission set-up, making it a versatile tool for practitioners.

Positions:

  • Primary: Mount
  • Secondary: Side Control

Japanese Name:

  • N/A

How to Perform the Gift Wrap Technique from Mount:

  1. Positioning:

    • Begin in a secure, high mount position on your opponent, with your knees close to their ears and your legs spread wide for stability. Keep your hips low to maintain control.
  2. Control the Arm:

    • Use your right hand to control your opponent’s right wrist, pinning it to the mat next to their head.
  3. Threaten the Neck:

    • Slide your left hand under your opponent’s head, reaching for the far side of their body to make them aware of a potential choke.
  4. Set Up the Wrap:

    • Release your right hand's grip on their wrist, quickly threading your right hand over their trapped arm's wrist and under their head so that your right hand and arm mirror your left, under their head and neck.
  5. Capture the Arm:

    • With your right and left hands connected, manipulate and pull your opponent's right wrist into their opposite shoulder, across their body.
  6. Isolate and Control:

    • Adjust your mount position, pulling their right elbow across their body, trapping the arm between your chest and their chest, ensuring to maintain a clasp on the lower wrist.
  7. Establish Dominance:

    • With the opponent’s right arm trapped and crossed over, you now have increased control. Shift your weight slightly forward to apply pressure and limit their mobility further.
  8. Submission Setup (Optional):

    • From here, various submissions are possible, such as transitioning to an armbar or opening for a choke due to the 'gift-wrapped' nature of their right arm.

Key Details:

  • Maintain top pressure while controlling the wrist to prevent your opponent's escape.
  • Ensure the opponent's shoulder and neck are pressured evenly to trap their arm effectively.
  • Practice is critical for transitioning to submissions fluently from this position.
  • Ensuring your own posture is stable will enhance control.

Remember, technique over strength is crucial. Practice this with your partner repeatedly to refine precision and fluidity, always ensuring safety and mutual respect.

How to Execute

# Gift Wrap from Mount

## Setup

- **Initial Position Details**: Begin in the full mount position on your opponent. Your knees should be pinching tight against their sides, and your weight should be centered over their chest to maintain control and balance.

- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Establish a cross-collar grip with your right hand (assuming your opponent's right arm is targeted) by reaching deep into their left collar. Your left hand should be placed on the mat for base, helping you maintain balance and control.

## Steps

1. **Isolate the Arm**:
   - Use your right hand (with the cross-collar grip) to pull up and across, turning your opponent's head slightly to the side. This movement helps in isolating their right arm.
   - With your left hand, grab your opponent's wrist on the same side (their right wrist), pinning it to the mat.

2. **Thread Under the Arm**:
   - Slide your left hand underneath your opponent's right arm, reaching across their body.
   - Grab their right wrist or sleeve with your left hand, effectively wrapping their arm around their own head.

3. **Establish the Gift Wrap**:
   - With your left hand securing their right wrist, use your right hand to control their elbow or tricep.
   - Pull their elbow tight towards their head, ensuring their arm is wrapped securely around their neck.

4. **Maintain Control**:
   - Adjust your base by keeping your knees tight and maintaining your weight low on their chest to prevent any escape attempts.
   - Lean slightly towards their head to apply pressure and prevent them from bridging or shrimping out.

5. **Setup for Attacks**:
   - From the gift wrap, you have multiple attack options, including transitioning to back control or setting up an armbar.
   - To transition to the back, slide your knee across their body and pull them to their side, taking their back with the gift wrap in place.

## Key Points

- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - The cross-collar grip is crucial for controlling their head movement and setting up the isolation of the arm.
  - Keep your knees tight and your weight centered to maintain control during the transition.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Avoid leaving too much space between your hips and their body, as this can allow them to escape.
  - Do not loosen your grip on their wrist or arm, as losing control can easily allow them to free their arm and escape the position.
