About This Technique

Gift Wrap to Back Take from Mount

The Gift Wrap to Back Take is a strategic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that transitions from the mount position to gaining control of your opponent’s back. Perfect for creating openings and establishing a dominant position, this sequence allows for multiple submission opportunities once the back is taken.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Establish the Mount:

    • Begin in a solid mount position, maintaining stability and balance over your opponent.
    • Keep your knees tightly clasped onto your opponent's sides, and ensure your weight is distributed evenly.
  2. Control your Opponent's Arm:

    • Use one hand to cup the back of your opponent's head and the other to grip their wrist.
    • Drive your opponent’s arm across their face with your chest pressure. This will often mean pushing the wrist toward their opposite shoulder.
  3. **Secure the Gift Wrap: **

    • Slide the hand that was pressing their wrist behind your opponent’s head, reaching for their wrist with your other hand.
    • Lock their arm in place, fixing their wrist under their neck, effectively creating the 'gift wrap'. This will limit their mobility.
  4. Transition To Back Take:

    • Once you have secured the gift wrap, start to shift your weight to one side of their body and initiate the transition.
    • Roll to the same side that you’ve captured the arm, using your grip on their wrist and head for leverage and direction.
    • As you roll over, use your knees and legs to guide them, striving to keep your chest connected to their back.
  5. Establish Hooks and Secure Control:

    • As you start to take the back, ensure you slide your bottom hook in first (the leg closest to the direction you are turning).
    • Once the bottom hook is established, slide in the top hook, making sure both feet are secure.
    • Adjust your position until you are comfortably seated with both hooks placed under their thighs.
  6. Achieve Finishing Controls (Optional):

    • Once the back position is secured with your hooks, focus on controlling your opponent by adding a seatbelt grip.
    • You may initiate submissions such as Rear Naked Choke or transition to other attacks based on your game plan.

Tips and Considerations:

  • Maintain constant pressure: When transitioning positions, maintaining pressure will limit your opponent's possible escape.
  • Smooth transition: Ensure that your movement from Mount to Back is fluid to prevent giving your opponent opportunities to escape.

Having control of the back places you in a superior position, granting access to various submissions and thus potentially ending the confrontation in your favor.

How to Execute

Starting Position: Mount

  1. Establish Mount Control

    • Begin in the mount position on top of your opponent, ensuring your knees are pinched against their sides and your feet are hooked underneath their thighs to maintain stability.
  2. Create an Opening

    • Use your body weight to pressure your opponent, causing them to react. Often, they will attempt to frame against your chest or push on your hips to create space.
  3. Isolate an Arm

    • When your opponent extends an arm to push or frame, use your hand on the same side to quickly trap their wrist, pinning it to the mat.
  4. Cross-grab the Wrist

    • With your opposite hand, reach across your opponent’s neck and grab their wrist you've pinned, making sure your arm is deeply across their body.
  5. Secure the Gift Wrap

    • Pull their wrist towards their opposite shoulder, using your chest to apply pressure to their arm. Your goal is to make them turn slightly onto their side.
    • Your free hand should slide behind the opponent’s head, grabbing your own wrist to reinforce the grip.
  6. Shift Your Base

    • Maintaining the gift wrap hold, adjust your base by sliding your knee on the side of the trapped arm higher towards your opponent’s head.
    • Your other leg should remain stable, ready to support your transition.
  7. Open Space for the Back Take

    • Use your gift wrap control to encourage your opponent to turn further onto their side, opening the space behind their back.
  8. Insert Hook

    • As your opponent turns, insert your bottom hook (the foot on the same side as the gift wrap) by sliding your leg underneath their body.
  9. Pull to Back Control

    • Once the bottom hook is in, use your grip to pull your opponent towards you while you lean back slightly, creating leverage for the back take.
  10. Secure Second Hook

    • As you pull your opponent into back control, quickly insert your second hook by sliding your other leg over their body, establishing full back control.
  11. Solidify Back Control

    • Adjust your grips, releasing the gift wrap to establish a seatbelt grip: one arm over the shoulder and the other under the armpit.
    • Keep your head tight against theirs to prevent them from escaping.
  12. Finish with Control

    • Maintain tightness with your hooks and seatbelt grip, ready to transition to a choke or control position as needed.

By following these steps, you can effectively transition from the mount to a dominant back control position using the gift wrap technique. Practice each step to ensure smooth execution during live training.
