Technique Steps
1. Establish Control:
- Side Control: Begin in a top side control position.
- Ensure you have good control over your opponent's body, with your dominant side pressed against their torso.
- Secure an underhook with your top arm.
2. Setup the Choke:
- Encourage your opponent to turn slightly towards you by applying light shoulder pressure on their jaw or neck.
- As they turn or frame on your body, look to slide your far arm (on the opposite side of their body) under their neck.
3. Thread the Arm:
- Guide your arm deep under their neck and reach through until your hand can grasp your own opposite bicep.
- Your other arm should wrap around your opponent's neck, simulating a vice grip.
4. Lock the Choke:
- Secure your hand on your opposite bicep and bring your supporting hand to rest behind your opponent's neck or on your chest.
- Ensure the opponent's arm is trapped in the grip to prevent escape.
5. Apply Pressure:
- Drop your shoulder downward and squeeze your elbows towards each other.
- Simultaneously, apply pressure by dropping your body weight lower and pulling your opponent's head upward.
6. Final Adjustments:
- Ensure the choke is deep by adjusting your grip on your bicep if needed.
- Maintain strong hip pressure to prevent your opponent from rolling out or creating space.
Closing the Submission:
- Once the choke is applied with correct pressure, control, and positioning, your opponent will usually tap to indicate submission.
Tips:
- Utilize proper leverage and body weight rather than brute strength.
- Keep your arms tight to minimize their space for escape.
- Practice the choke slowly to understand the nuances of control and pressure.
The D'Arce choke, when executed correctly, is a highly effective submission against wary opponents, showcasing technique and control. It requires practice and precision but can be a pivotal addition to any grappler's arsenal. Enjoy practicing and refining this skill on the mat!
How to Execute
# D'Arce Choke from Side Control
## Setup
- **Initial Position**: Begin in side control on your opponent's right side, with your chest facing their side. Ensure you maintain a strong base by keeping your knees wide and your weight distributed evenly.
- **Grips and Controls**: Your left arm should be under your opponent's head, and your right arm should be under their far arm (cross-face position). Use your right hand to control their far side, preventing them from turning into you.
## Steps
1. **Establish Underhook**: Slide your right arm deeper under your opponent's far arm, transitioning from the cross-face to an underhook position. Your right hand should now be reaching towards their neck, creating space under their armpit.
2. **Thread the Arm**: Use your left arm to thread through under your opponent's neck, aiming to reach your own bicep with your left hand. This action will start forming the choke structure.
3. **Lock Your Hands**: Once your left hand reaches your right bicep, grab it, forming a figure-four lock. Your right hand should now move to the back of your opponent's head to complete the grip.
4. **Adjust Position**: Shift your weight slightly forward and drop your chest onto the back of your opponent's shoulder. This will enhance the pressure of the choke and help secure the position.
5. **Apply the Choke**: Squeeze your arms together by pulling your left elbow down towards your ribs and pushing your right wrist forward into your opponent's neck. Simultaneously, walk your hips towards their head to tighten the choke.
6. **Finish**: Maintain pressure and hold the position until your opponent taps out, indicating submission.
## Key Points
- **Maintain Control**: Always keep your weight centered over your opponent to avoid losing the position. Stay connected with your chest and hips.
- **Arm Placement**: Ensure your left arm is deep under the neck and your right arm maintains control under their armpit. The deeper the placement, the more effective the choke.
- **Pressure Application**: Use your chest and body weight to apply consistent pressure. The choke should feel tight and controlled without excessive force.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Failing to secure a deep grip with your left arm, leading to a weak choke.
- Allowing too much space for your opponent to escape by not keeping your weight forward.
- Not locking the figure-four grip tightly, which can result in losing the position.
