About This Technique
Here are step-by-step instructions for executing a Bow and Arrow Choke from Back Mount position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Step 1: Secure the Back Mount Position
First, secure the back mount position on your opponent. This means you should be behind your opponent with your legs hooked around their waist (hooks in) and your chest against their back.
Step 2: Control the Collar
Reach your dominant hand deep into the collar of your opponent's gi, on the same side. This grip should be palm up, thumb inside, with your four fingers on the outside of the collar. You want to grip as deep as possible, ideally your wrist should be touching the back of their neck.
Step 3: Shift your Position
Shift your position so that you are perpendicular to your opponent. Your head should be near their head with your bodies forming a "T" shape. In this process, your bottom hook (the one on the same side as your collar grip) may come out, and that’s fine.
Step 4: Secure the Leg
With your free hand, grab your opponent’s far pant leg at the knee. This will limit their movement and set you up for the finish.
Step 5: Adjust the Top Leg
Adjust your top leg (the one that still has a hook in) so that your shin is behind your opponent’s back, with your foot hooked over their hip. This will provide an anchor as you move to finish the choke.
Step 6: Lean Back and Apply Pressure
Lean back to apply pressure, pulling your collar-grip hand towards you while pushing their knee away with your other hand. At the same time, push your hooked leg against their back. This combination of movements will create the choke.
Step 7: Finish the Choke
To finish the choke, continue to pull your collar-grip hand towards you, while pushing with your leg and the hand that's on their leg. Be sure to keep your elbow close to your body to maximize pressure. If done properly, your opponent should tap out.
Remember, always practice these techniques under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a contact sport and should be practiced responsibly.
How to Execute
# Bow and Arrow Choke from Back Mount
The Bow and Arrow Choke is a powerful submission technique that can be executed from the back mount position. Here are the detailed steps to perform this technique:
## Step-by-Step Instructions
### Step 1: Secure the Back Mount
1. **Establish Control:**
- Start by securing the back mount position.
- Place your hooks in by wrapping your legs around your opponent’s waist, with your feet positioned inside their thighs.
- Keep your chest tight against their back for control.
2. **Seat Belt Grip:**
- Use a seat belt grip to control your opponent.
- One arm should go over your opponent's shoulder (the choking arm), and the other hand should go under their opposite armpit.
- Clasp your hands together, keeping the grip tight.
### Step 2: Set Up the Choke
1. **Open the Collar:**
- With the hand under your opponent’s armpit, reach up and open their lapel.
- Use your fingers to create space in the collar for your choking hand to enter.
2. **Insert Choking Hand:**
- Slide your choking hand (the hand over the shoulder) into your opponent’s collar.
- Aim to get a deep grip with your fingers inside the collar. Your thumb should be outside, ensuring a strong grip.
### Step 3: Control the Opponent’s Body
1. **Grip the Pants:**
- With your non-choking hand, reach down and grab your opponent’s far side pants near their knee.
- This grip will help control their lower body and assist in the choke application.
### Step 4: Execute the Choke
1. **Position Your Legs:**
- Remove the hook on the same side as your choking hand.
- Extend this leg straight out, while keeping the other hook in place to maintain control.
2. **Rotate Your Body:**
- Start rotating your body towards the side of your choking arm.
- This rotation helps to apply pressure to your opponent’s neck.
3. **Pull and Finish:**
- While rotating, pull back on the collar with your choking hand.
- Simultaneously, use the non-choking hand to pull their pants towards you.
- This dual action creates the bow and arrow effect, tightening the choke.
4. **Apply Pressure:**
- Ensure that the choke is applied with even pressure.
- Your opponent should feel the pressure on both sides of their neck.
- Continue to apply pressure until your opponent taps.
## Tips for Success
- **Stay Tight:** Maintain a tight connection with your opponent throughout the technique for better control.
- **Angle Adjustment:** Adjust your angle as needed to ensure the choke is tight and effective.
- **Maintain Balance:** Keep your balance and control to prevent your opponent from escaping or reversing the position.
By following these steps, you can effectively execute the Bow and Arrow Choke from the back mount position.
