About This Technique

Escaping Back Mount

Escaping back mount is a critical defensive skill in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It involves turning a highly disadvantageous position into an opportunity for escape or even countering your opponent. This escape focuses on minimizing the threat of chokes while creating space to move and reverse.

Step-by-Step Guide

Position: Back Mount

Japanese Name: Ushiro Seoi Nage

Top/Bottom: Bottom

Steps to Perform the Technique:

  1. Protect the Neck:

    • Immediately bring both hands up to defend against any choke attempts (like the rear naked choke) by controlling one of your opponent's arms.
    • Focus on gripping the forearm of the arm that's attempting to go around your neck.
  2. Establish a Strong Base:

    • Keep your chin tucked to protect your neck further.
    • Try to bring your shoulders up to cut down space between your neck and their choking arm.
  3. Bridge Variation 1 – Get on One Side:

    • Choose a side to escape towards. For example, if you have better control over their left arm, decide to escape to your left side.
    • Use a bridge movement to tilt your body to your chosen side.
  4. Clear the Hook:

    • Use your foot on the side you’re bridging towards to clear their hook. It can often be helpful to press their hook away using your heel.
  5. Rotate and Turn:

    • Once the hook is cleared, continue turning your body towards the mat.
    • Place your back on the ground by turning your shoulder in the direction of the slide.
  6. Move Hips to Create Space:

    • Push your hips away from your opponent as you rotate. This helps to disengage them more thoroughly.
  7. Achieve a Dominant Position:

    • Depending on the situation, you can either scramble to get to a neutral position, such as on your knees; alternatively, you could look to obtain a guard position.
  8. Control and Stabilize:

    • Once you're facing your opponent, focus on establishing grips or positional control to prevent them from regaining the back mount.

Tips:

  • Stay Calm: Panicking can worsen the situation and expose your neck to chokes.
  • Constant Pressure and Movement: Don’t linger in one spot; keep moving to prevent your opponent from adjusting their mount.
  • Practice: This escape requires timing and fluidity to execute effectively, making repetition and practice key.

Escaping back mount is a vital defense mechanism, involving strategy, technique, and agility. Mastering it can significantly improve your defensive repertoire in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

How to Execute

# Escaping Back Mount from Back Mount Position in BJJ

## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: You are in the back mount position with your opponent behind you. They have their hooks in (feet hooked around your hips) and are controlling you with a seatbelt grip (one arm over your shoulder and the other under your arm).
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Your primary focus is to control your opponent's choking arm (the arm over your shoulder), as this is the immediate threat. Use both hands to secure a good grip on this arm.

## Steps

1. **Protect Your Neck**
   - Immediately use both hands to grip your opponent's choking arm. Focus on controlling their wrist and forearm to prevent any choke attempts.

2. **Establish a Strong Base**
   - Plant your feet firmly on the mat, close to your buttocks. This will help you generate power for the escape.

3. **Move to the Safe Side**
   - Decide which side to escape. Ideally, you want to escape towards the side where your opponent's choking arm is over your shoulder. By doing this, you minimize their ability to apply a rear-naked choke effectively.

4. **Bridge and Turn**
   - Perform a strong bridge by pushing through your feet and lifting your hips. As you bridge, turn towards the arm you are controlling, aiming to drop your shoulder to the mat and start facing your opponent.

5. **Clear the Hook**
   - As you turn, use your same-side hand to push down on your opponent’s hook, helping to clear their leg from around your hip. Simultaneously, slide your hips towards the mat to create more space.

6. **Rotate and Face Your Opponent**
   - Continue turning until you are able to face your opponent. Secure a top position or move into their guard.

7. **Secure Position**
   - Once you have rotated to face your opponent, work to establish a more dominant position, such as moving to their closed guard or transitioning into a more advantageous position.

## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
  - Always control the choking arm first; this is your immediate threat.
  - Bridge effectively to create space and disrupt your opponent's control.
  - Use your hips actively to maneuver out of the hooks and rotate to face your opponent.

- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
  - Neglecting the neck control, which can lead to a quick submission.
  - Not using your hips effectively, which can keep you stuck in back mount.
  - Turning to the wrong side, which can tighten your opponent’s grip and make escaping more difficult.
