About This Technique
Arm-Drag Monkey Roll
Overview:
The arm-drag monkey roll is a dynamic grappling technique employed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to transition from a guard position to a dominant control position or gain an advantageous angle on your opponent.
Position:
The arm-drag monkey roll can be effectively utilized from:
- Butterfly Guard
- Standing Position
Japanese Name:
N/A
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Initial Setup:
- Begin in the butterfly guard position, seated with your shins inside your opponent's thighs.
- Maintain a strong upright posture, using your hands to control your opponent's wrists or sleeves.
-
Execute the Arm-Drag:
- Achieve an arm-drag by crossing your right hand across to grip your opponent's left tricep.
- Simultaneously, pull their arm across your body, using your left hand to guide it to the left side.
- Pivot your body to the right, angling your knees to create space.
-
Position for the Monkey Roll:
- Use your left foot to push off against the mat, starting a scooting motion.
- Duck your head underneath your opponent's left arm, getting your left ear to their left armpit.
-
Perform the Roll:
- Maintain control of the arm-drag by holding their tricep with a tight grip.
- Keep rolling by turning your body aggressively to the right, using the momentum of the arm-drag to unbalance your opponent.
-
Take the Back:
- As you complete the roll, position yourself behind your opponent.
- Secure back control by establishing seatbelt grips (one arm over the shoulder and the other under their opposite armpit).
- Use foot hooks (hooks in), inserting them inside your opponent's inner thighs for leverage and control.
-
Control and Submission Opportunities:
- Once on the back, work toward a rear-naked choke or other finishing techniques by distracting and manipulating your opponent's balance.
Notes:
- Timing and precision are crucial in achieving a successful arm-drag monkey roll.
- Pay attention to your opponent's reactions, maintaining tight control during the transitions to minimize any counter opportunities.
- Practice maintaining a strong posture and using leverage rather than raw strength to effectively execute this grappling maneuver.
How to Execute
# Arm-Drag Monkey Roll from Butterfly Guard
## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Start in the seated Butterfly Guard position. Your legs should be bent with your feet on the mat, knees wide. Your opponent should be in front of you, either kneeling or in a combat base.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**: Establish a grip on your opponent's opposite-side sleeve or wrist with one hand. With your other hand, reach across and grab the tricep or the back of the opponent’s arm you are controlling. This is the arm-drag grip.
## Steps
1. **Initiate the Arm-Drag**:
- Pull the opponent's arm across your body, using your grip on their tricep or sleeve. Simultaneously, scoot your hips slightly to the side opposite the direction you're pulling their arm. This creates an off-balance effect and exposes their back.
2. **Create a Hook with Your Leg**:
- As you pull their arm across, use your same-side leg to hook under their thigh on the side you are dragging toward. This hook helps to control their movement and set up the roll.
3. **Execute the Monkey Roll**:
- With your other arm, reach around your opponent's waist or far hip to secure control of their body. Lean toward the side of the arm-drag, using your hook to assist in the movement.
- Roll to your back while maintaining the arm-drag grip and your hook. Use the momentum to bring your opponent over and transition them past your body.
4. **Complete the Transition**:
- As they come over, release the arm-drag grip and use your free hand to establish control on their far side, often by grabbing their belt or lat.
- Use your legs to kick and turn your body to come up onto your knees, effectively taking their back or transitioning to a top position.
5. **Secure the Position**:
- Once on their back, establish your hooks by inserting your feet inside their thighs. Secure your seatbelt grip by wrapping one arm over their shoulder and the other under their armpit, clasping your hands together.
## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
- Ensure your arm-drag is tight and controlled to prevent your opponent from pulling their arm back.
- Use your legs actively to create the necessary leverage and movement for the roll.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Failing to control the opponent's arm properly, which can allow them to escape or counter the move.
- Not using your hook effectively can cause a loss of control during the roll, leading to an incomplete transition.
- Neglecting to secure control after the transition, which can allow the opponent to regain a dominant position.
