About This Technique
Back Control Technique
Back control, often heralded as one of the most dominant positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, involves maintaining control over an opponent's back, where many submission opportunities arise. Here's how to efficiently gain and maintain back control:
Position
- Position: Back Mount
- Japanese Name: (N/A)
Steps to Perform Back Control
1. Establish Seatbelt Grip
- From a dominant position (such as side control or mount), transition to the opponent's back.
- Secure a seatbelt grip: one arm goes over the opponent's shoulder and under the arm while your other hand comes under the opposite armpit. Lock your hands together.
2. Hooks or Body Triangle
- Double Hooks: Insert your heels in front of your opponent’s thighs. Flex your feet and engage your legs for added control.
- Body Triangle: Wrap one leg around your opponent's waist and lock your foot behind your opposite knee. This closed loop makes it more difficult for the opponent to escape.
3. Maintain Connection
- Stay tight to your opponent’s back, pulling them into you with the seatbelt grip.
- Keep your head close to theirs to limit their head movement and visibility.
4. Manage Position Wisely
- Keep Your Chest Tight: This attachment provides more control as you can feel your opponent's movements and react accordingly.
- Control Hip Line: Use your hips to manipulate the opponent's movement by tilting their hips off-center.
5. React to Defense Attempts
- Chin Tuck/Avoiding Collars: Use your hand to pull down on their chin before securing a collar grip.
- Shouldering/Hiking Shoulders up: Elevate your seatbelt arm higher to counter their shoulder defense while keeping legs fixed.
6. Work for Submissions
- Rear Naked Choke: Slide the arm under the opponent's chin, squeeze in, and lock with the opposite arm behind their head.
- Collar Choke: For gi, use the opponent's collar to apply a choke.
Tips for Effective Back Control
- Adjusting Hooks: Shift your hooks higher or lower on your opponent's thighs to counter their escape attempts.
- Staying Patience: Back control is a position to work keeps rather than rushing submissions. Take your time to make adjustments.
Maintaining back control can result in a high finish rate given its dominance; however, patience and constant mobility are key to thwarting escape attempts while being methodical in your submission hunting.
How to Execute
# Back Control from Back Mount Position
## Setup
- **Initial Position Details**: Begin with your opponent in the seated position and you positioned behind them. You should be on your buttocks, with your chest close to your opponent's back. Ensure your head is close to theirs, almost like you are whispering to them.
- **Grips and Controls Needed**:
- Secure the seatbelt grip: One arm goes over the opponent’s shoulder while the other goes under their armpit. Connect your hands in the center of their chest.
- Use your legs to establish hooks by threading your feet inside their thighs, ensuring your heels are gently pressing against their inner thighs.
## Steps
1. **Establish Hooks**:
- Insert both of your hooks by bringing your feet inside your opponent's thighs. Your heels should pull towards your body to maintain tight leg control.
2. **Secure the Seatbelt Grip**:
- The arm over the opponent’s shoulder should be your primary choking arm. The other arm wraps under their armpit. Connect your hands by hiding the choking hand with the other hand, forming a strong grip at the center of their chest.
3. **Maintain Chest-to-Back Connection**:
- Keep your chest glued to their back. This ensures they carry your weight and prevents them from escaping easily.
4. **Head Positioning**:
- Keep your head close to theirs, slightly off to the side of the choking arm. This helps in controlling their head movement and protects your face.
5. **Control and Adjust**:
- Use your legs to pull the opponent closer by tightening your hooks. This helps in maintaining control and preventing them from escaping or turning into you.
## Key Points
- **Important Details to Remember**:
- Always maintain a tight connection between your chest and their back.
- Keep your hooks active by pressing your heels into their inner thighs.
- Protect your hands by hiding the choking hand with the other hand to prevent grip breaks.
- **Common Mistakes to Avoid**:
- Do not cross your feet while applying the hooks, as this can lead to a painful foot lock if your opponent knows how to counter it.
- Avoid leaving space between your chest and their back, as this can allow them to escape or rotate.
- Do not lean too far back, as it can give the opponent space to escape or reverse the position.
By following these steps and focusing on the key points, you can effectively maintain back control from the back mount position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
